The Circl pavilion’s digital twin

The entire Circl Pavilion was scanned from top to bottom, producing a precise virtual digital twin that plays a vital role during both the dismantling process and the reuse of building materials. Joost Puttenstein from lcp-circulair, the organisation responsible for dismantling on behalf of Icon Real Estate, explains why.

The Circl pavilion was built in 2017 by ABN AMRO with the idea that it could be re-used by dismantling it and rebuilding it elsewhere. Lcp-circulair, which specialises in the circular reuse of building materials and dismantling projects, is taking on this challenge.

Joost Puttenstein: “Creating a digital twin is a key part of our approach. Using a scan, the building is mapped to the millimetre: the structure, all materials and components. This allows us to efficiently and carefully disassemble the building materials, maximising their potential for reuse”.

The ‘Material Passport’

The digital twin of the Circl pavilion was created by Ter Velde & Den Besten, who walked through the entire building with 3D laser scanners. The results were used to build a 3D floor plan, to which coordinates were added. Every piece of building material leaving the site is stored in special boxes, each with its own code. Each code is linked to a ‘material passport’, which contains information about the material’s location on the floor plan, its history and other relevant details about that component and the dismantling process.

Knowledge for the Future

By meticulously documenting everything, we gain insights into the dismantling process and where the building components came from. The aim is to make this knowledge widely available in the future, helping to make circular construction more common. Puttenstein adds: “That is ultimately the most important part because circular construction ensures that building materials are given a second life, reducing the environmental impact of construction. It’s a challenge, but the knowledge we gain in the end is worth it”.
